Today a friend sent me a message, it was as petition from MADD to send to President Bush. It had a very sad poem about a girl who was killed by a drunk driver. It really hit home with me. In February of 2004, a drunk driver killed my cousin Becky, and her two children Austin and Miranda. Austin was 4 and Miranda was 3. They were going to see their daddy and take him some dinner, at a garage where he was working on his racecar. It had been raining and the roads were slick. Becky was going north and the drunk driver was behind her. He was speeding and decided to pass, when he did a tow truck topped the hill. Becky saw the tow truck and slammed on her brakes causing her to go into a tailspin. The tow truck swerved to miss the driver and when he did he slammed into the side of Becky’s SUV, hitting the exact spot where Miranda was sitting. The obviously drunken man stopped at the scene but left quickly, stating he didn’t want his own two children who were in the car with him to see a dead body. He was never identified and never brought to justice.
This is a horrible situation for any family to go through. I wish that guy could have been there the day we laid Becky and her babies to rest. Their bodies mangled to the point they were all lay to rest in one single coffin. I wish he could have seen the pain and heartache on her parent’s faces, but most of all the complete destruction of one mans world. Greg her husband. He lost his whole world that day. His wife and his two children, his whole world, people should think before they step behind a wheel after drinking. It kills plain and simple. It was 6:00 PM when Becky was killed, not midnight or 1 am. She was caring for her husband, and being the wonderful giving person that she was. She always put others needs before her own and never met a person who didn’t like her. She was a volunteer with the church and was always quick to tell you about her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I don’t worry for Becky, I know she now walks the street of gold. I do however worry about the drunk that killed her, I hope he can make his peace with the Lord before he kills another innocent family or worse yet his own.
You can click here (http://www.goodbyes.org/adams) to see a memorial page for Becky and her family. I hope that if you drink and drive, you will look at this page. I hope you will look at the faces of those sweet little babies and realize that what you are doing is wrong. Read the message board, and see what grief her friends and family have gone through. Then take a good look at your own family cause they could be the people that you kill or maybe even yourself.
